Congratulations to the VASJ Class of 2017

Bonnie Brihan: 2017grads &emdash;

Faculty, staff, friends, and family of the Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School Class of 2017 gathered at Ss. Robert and William Church in Euclid for the commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 25.

As of this date, 38 members of the class of 2017 have reported to us grants and scholarships. These 38 students had a total award amount of $5,720,400!

The weather did not cooperate but the graduates were all smiles (and a few tears). Nothing was going to rain on the parade of the Class of 2017.

Longtime religion teacher and VASJ’s Coordinator of Mission Effectiveness Bill Raddell ’68 opened the ceremony by welcoming guests and giving the invocation.

Four students were selected from a group of more than 10 who auditioned to speak at graduation. Those students were William Vidmar, Andre George, Vincent Mauceri, and Kennedi Combs.

They spoke of how VASJ had become their second homes, and how their classmates and teachers had become their second families. They spoke about how much they had grown and matured over their four years at VASJ and the tremendous amount of pride that comes from being a Viking. They took time to thank those who helped them get to graduation day, including parents, family, faculty and staff.

Four years ago, the Viking Service Award was founded to promote service among our students and recognize those who give unselfishly of their time and talents.  The award is presented to those students who complete at least twice the number of required service hours at an approved non-profit agency and submit a reflection of this service to the Campus Minister. Two students in the senior class have earned the Viking Service Award each of their four year.  To commemorate this achievement, the Soli Deo Gloria award is presented to:

Grace Carlson

The Timothy Robertson Award was founded in memory of Tim Robertson, a St. Joe’s graduate and longtime administrator and faculty member at St. Joseph and VASJ.  Mr. Robertson’s love of the Viking Village was undeniable…he worked meticulously to assure no detail was left unattended, shared his love of mathematics with students even after his official retirement, attended sporting events as if he were a member of the team, and practiced his faith in a quiet, unassuming way.  Mr. Robertson did it all, often behind the scenes, because it would make St. Joseph or VASJ better, not because it was his job.

Receiving the sixth annual Timothy Robertson Award, for “bleeding red and blue,” is:

Vincent Mauceri

The Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland and the brothers and priests of the Society of Mary, also known as the Marianists, have both celebrated over 150 years of service. These two religious communities essentially founded and shaped the religious quality and spirit of our current school. St. Angela was the foundress of the Ursuline Sisters and Blessed William Joseph Chaminade began the Society of Mary.

In honor of the sesquicentennial anniversary, our school wanted to keep conscious our religious heritage by presenting an award to the senior female and senior male who, in the eyes of their classmates, are viewed as actively practicing the Gospel values most consistently in their four years at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High.  These two students, as selected by their classmates, were then confirmed by the administration.

The seventeenth annual St. Angela Award was presented to:

Mary Dirk

and the Blessed William Joseph Chaminade Award to:

David Paus

Congratulations to the scholars, leaders, and athletes in the class of 2017 as well as to the parents, teachers, and coaches for your support and influence on these young men & women.

“It is my honor and privilege to confirm to you that the young men and women we are about to call forward have successfully completed all requirements as required by the State of Ohio and by Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School to earn their high school diploma,” says VASJ Principal David Csank. “It is with great pleasure that I now present to you the graduates of the class of 2017.”

Graduates were then called by name to receive their diplomas. After all diplomas were received, all in attendance raised their right hands to bless the graduates before they sang the alma mater as a class one last time.
