The Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School community has been awarded a $30,000 grant from the Abington Foundation (Cleveland) in support of a new Engineering Resource Center. Specifically, the funds will be applied toward the purchase of new computers, software/courseware, networking, wiring and workspace renovation, all of which will further enhance VASJ’s already top-notch pre-engineering program without the school having to drastically raise tuition.
VASJ’s University of Dayton Pre-Engineering Program (UD PEP) was introduced in the 2005-2006 school year. UD PEP creates a community of learners that includes program students, UD students, VASJ teachers, UD faculty, UD alumni and area engineers to help introduce students to the field of engineering. The program prepares students academically and experientially to be accepted and succeed in an engineering program at an accredited institution, while infusing engineering with Christian values.
"VASJ’s goal with the UD PEP initiative is to give students an experience that will raise their confidence and help them feel more comfortable participating in a competitive technology field," comments engineering teacher Steve Wallace. “By providing the framework to picture and understand what they’re studying, this confidence is built.”
Wallace further noted that student enrollment in engineering courses has increased from one section of about 15 students in 2005-2006 to three sections of roughly 60 students currently. As the popularity of the UD PEP increases, VASJ engineering students will benefit greatly through grants such as this that help provide technology and experiences that are consistent with the top post-secondary institutions of the United States.
In addition, VASJ’s overall business/technology program is geared toward the formation of future business and technology leaders – leaders who have the knowledge, skills and motivation to lead the formation of our technology-based economy for the benefit and participation of all. VASJ’s curriculum in this discipline helps students achieve literacy in four key areas: computer technology, information technology, systems technology and high-tech business practices.
The Abington Foundation was established to support organizations which promote community health, welfare and education, primarily in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
